[TIP 73] Creating Data Table Heatmaps

Heatmaps can be used not only on a geographical map, but also within tables to highlight certain combinations rather than forcing the users to read through the different cells. Configuring those in Dundas BI is pretty simple using a few configurations:


  • Place one dimension on your metric set rows, another on your columns and one measure on the measures
  • Use color range rules to define the number of color categories you want the heatmap to produce
  • Define a state to color all the cells that you don't want to color using the color rules (i.e., in the image below, all no data values are colored gray using a state)
  • On your measure column, define custom text that will control the right size for each square (i.e., in the image below, we used the text "00" to control the cell size). Then change the light and dark font color properties to none so the custom text doesn't show, but only the cell color does.
