[TIP 72] Setting Up A Tab Navigation System

Since so many different applications offer tabs as a way to navigate between elements (i.e., in MS Excel, tabs are used to navigate between different sheets), users have gotten very used to and comfortable with this type of navigation (other navigation options are discussed here).

In Dundas BI, users often like to setup tabs within a single dashboard using layers assuming there are not too many tabs. In other cases, users may want to have many tabs, which are hard to maintain in a single dashboard and will opt to build each tab content in a separate dashboard.

In that case, the different tabs can be accessed via navigation between dashboards and a good way to expose that navigation, is by using the Tile Navigation component.

One convenient way to configure such behavior is by setting up a template with a container component that serves as the area where each tab (dashboard) content will be displayed. Using this approach, a Tile Navigation component can be added to the template and target the container. That way, the entire page isn't reloaded whenever the user chooses to navigate to the next tile (tab) and instead only the content within the container refreshes.

Here is how the Tile Navigation component should be configured:
