[TIP 71] Working with Tables and Limited Real Estate

Real estate is probably the most important factor to take into consideration when designing good dashboards that are meant to show all of the data visuals at-a-glance (i.e., without having to scroll and look for your data).


As a result, we often see designers trying to optimize the design of each element to make sure it fits well in the overall space without leaving unused space. The best designs are the ones that actually implement a high data to ink ratio (you can see more about that under this webinar).


One of those optimizations for data tables can come in the form of rotating your table column headers and saving unused space due to long headers. Configuring it in Dundas BI is quite simple as demonstrated in the image below, but one should remember that rotating the headers comes at the expense of making those harder to read, so don't forget, that sometimes less is more.
