Reusing a metric set - weird behaviour

I learned that one metric set = one query to the DB. That’s why I created my own metric set, and used it multiple times on my dashboard.

If I create an element and then slide data from my own metric set, a new MS will be created. If I now copy & paste this element, the same MS will be used, and for each element I can add/remove measures in the data analysis panel. I am effectively using the same MS with different columns.

If now I try it the other way round, meaning that I slide the existing metric set into my dashboard and configure it my way. It is great, my own MS is used. But then, if I copy and paste it, removing one measure from one element will remove it as well from the other elements. Is that the point?
It does not matter too much for labels, where I set explicitly the text. If more measures are avallable they do not show. For bars, one the other hand, I have too many bars displayed. Even marking one as hidden will hide it on all other elements.

Is there something I am missing? If what I see is normal, it would means that MS cannot really be reused in a the generic case.
Thanks,

Hey Guillaume,

Yes that is the point. Any field that you remove from the data analysis panel will be removed for all metric sets. If you want to remove something from only that particular visualization, you have to click on the “visualization” tab on the top right corner of the data analysis panel, go in there ,and then hide the columns you do not want to see in that particular visual.

I hope that helps.

Thanks Vidur, it makes sense indeed.

I think I still have a misunderstanding about the visualisation.

In your example for instance, imagine that I have 2 measures (say CustomerCount and CustomerRevenue) in the MS. I want to make 2 visualisations out of this MS, one bar chart with only CustomerCount and one with only CustomerRevenue.
If I go to visualisation I can select barHeight to be CustomerCount, for instance, but I will still see CustomerRevenue as well. Can I hide one of the measures from the bar chart?

So here i have your use case below, two measures “Freight” & “SubTotal”

I go to data analysis panel and click on the visualization tab. Here you can see 2 series being created, one for Freight & one for SubTotal.

Now suppose i only want to see Freight, i will remove the SubTotal measure from the bar height in the SubTotal Series.

See now that the SubTotal has gone but you can still see it in the Metric Set.

You can also do this on the dashboard by going to the properties of the visualization -> choosing the series and uncheck the visible checkbox

The first way seems to be way more complicated, but i just wanted you to know how to do it.

Hope this clears your doubt

Thanks Vidur,

What you say makes sense, but when I try it I do not get the same result as you.

I slid a MS into my dashboard. This MS has many columns, but I want to only display one (cpg_height_orate in my example).

This is my data analysis panel, with many columns:

This is my visualisation panel, with only cpg_height_orate:

As you see, all series (click, open…) still appear in the chart. If I remove all not relevant columns from the MS, then I have the output I expect (but then I cannot reuse the MS).

Would you understand what I am doing (or understanding) wrong?

(on a mostly unrelated note, the title of my series was automatically filled and is ‘measure series’. Is there a way for me to manually update this less than useful title? There are many places like that, for instance, data labels.)

Thanks,

Hi Guillaume,

Could you let us know what version of Dundas BI you are running? You can find the version here.

The likely reason why your graph is different from Vidur’s solution for reusing metric sets is that your metric set has been toggled to Transpose Result.

This option is accessible here:
Issue81311_1
Issue81311_2

Can you check if this option is checked off in your metric set? If it is, could you please try unchecking it and you should be able to follow Vidur’s steps.

Hope this helps and let me know how it works out.

Regards!
